“John Silveri was a mason who, along with his brother Dominick, came to this country in 1912 from a small town in the north of Italy called Castelnovo. They stepped off the boat with not much more than the clothes on their backs.
When I was a young boy, my grandfather showed me some small rubber forms which he then filled with a strange liquid concoction. To my amazement, the next day he pulled out a solid rock figurine that looked just like an Indian chief. I couldn’t believe it! That was my first understanding of how concrete works!
My father, Orlando Silveri, learned masonry from my grandfather literally from the ground up – and I in turn learned from the ground up from my dad, making me the third generation of Silveris to follow the mason’s trade. I learned a long time ago the right way to do this kind of work, whether it be pointing a brick wall, constructing the foundation of a house, or the precision of building a set of brick steps.
So! When I started my company in 1983, I was pretty confident in my ability, but by no means knew everything. For my first couple of years, I can honestly say it wasn’t easy. But I always had my father to ask questions about certain situations on some jobs, because there was one thing that I was sure of – the customer would always get the best job possible – done right the first time. My father and I one day had a heart to heart talk, and he told me something I will never forget. He told me that if I wanted to be successful in my business, I was to do each and every job better than the other guy, and for less money.
After 35 years in business, I have to say that his advice was dead on – and I continue to use this philosophy in my career.” -Tom Silveri
